For me, starting Lems wasn’t just about making shoes; It was about starting a company that I could enjoy to work in, day in and day out. In first couple years, I went through struggling times, from working out of my parents’ garage to working out of the back room of a dirty steel mill. I dreamed of the day that I would have a team and an office that I could call ‘home’ for Lems. Last year, after Lems turned five, we finally moved out of my hometown, and we relocated to Boulder, Colorado. Earlier this year we added our eighth Lems team member, and completed a recent move into our new office in downtown Boulder.
I’ve never been more excited about our future. We’re in the right place at the right time, and we now have the right team to get us there. We have fun together and we each love living and working in Boulder. Our new office is a stone throw away from some of the best hiking, running, and mountain biking trails in the country, trails that we can put our Lems to the test. Besides the outdoors, being located in Boulder also means that we’re among some very eccentric, open-minded, and fun loving people. It’s a great place to learn about our customers, and their lifestyles. After the early years of being a bootstrapped startup, I’m happy to say, that all of us at Lems finally get to live the lifestyle that Lems represents and grow our company in a very unique way.
Wholesailor of the Seven Seas
Hello, I am Steve. I am a dynamic human. I have a 6’1”, 185 lb frame, jet-black hair as thick as hay, which has been known to cause much fever, and a skin tone that could be classified as orange. I have written many award-winning books that have yet to receive their due accolades. I can make homemade Thirty-Minute Betty Crocker chocolate chip cookies in under twenty minutes (feel free to check my Strava for verification). I play the harp quite proficiently and my skills have been used as a medical cure for memory loss. Now, I may look like an emotionless, sarcastic carrot, but I would say I am more of a sweet onion. Once you begin peeling off the layers, deep down you will find the exact same thing, every single time and more often than not tears ensue. Now, enough about me. How did I become a part of the Lems Shoes crew?
In the year 2012, I was on the brink of being drafted by the Philadelphia Soul Arena Football Team, when I decided to take a European backpack vacation with Mr. Andrew Rademacher. During that month of planes, trains, and escapades in Spain, Andrew spoke of his shoe company that had just taken off and like a Turkish bath house it was gaining steam, but the workload was becoming too much for a one-man team. As we all know, every superstar needs a Scottie Pippen, so I skipped preseason with the Soul and started learning about soles.
From that point on, I did everything and anything I could to contribute to the company, which equated to making coffee and copies, but because I am able to manage time more proficiently than Father himself, I started to take on more responsibilities. I was once referred to as the Man of Many Hats because I was working everything from customer service to photography to social media to janitorial jobs, but now I just find myself wearing one – the captain’s, because I am the Wholesailor of the Seven Seas and I aim to scour the seven continents in hopes of finding the perfect stores for our products. If you are an interested footwear buyer or a hat company that would like to sponsor my headwear addiction, feel free to email me direct at firstname.lastname@example.org.
A serious/contradictive note: Though I work for a company that sells a product, and a damn good one at that, we are a minimalist brand and it is my opinion that our tagline represents me to a T– live easy and minimal. In a society where we are consumed by consumerism and symbols of wealth/success, I have attempted to live my life with less. Like our shoes, by eliminating the nonessentials from everyday life I have found much more flexibility for personal change and all-around freedom. So, thank you Lems Shoes, for helping me realign myself, starting from the feet up.
Hi friends! I’m Audrey. When I first had the opportunity to work for Lems, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Coming from the Fashion School at Kent State University, with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing, let’s just say “Live Easy and Minimal” wasn’t necessarily something that I was too familiar with. I was constantly surrounded by girls in heels wearing high-fashion articles of clothing and complete to a T with full faces of makeup. Mind you, this was typically while we were attending a 7:45am class, on Monday morning. Uh, what? Yeah it happened. However, it’s safe to say I wasn’t one of them – I played soccer for the university so I had a nice balance of both worlds.
With that being said – while all of my friends were pursuing dreams of living in NYC, Miami or LA, I was dreaming of the mountains and living out west. And well, here I am! I was brought onto Lems in 2015, had two weeks to leave my current job in Corporate America, pack up my apartment, buy a one way ticket and make the 1,346 mile move from Cleveland, to Boulder.
You know how many people I knew here at the time? Let’s just say I had met Andrew + Steve about a month prior… and well, that was it. Do you think I’m crazy yet? I feel like that’s the first question everyone asks me when I tell them this story. “You seriously moved across the country to work in a company with 2 other guys that you don’t even know?”… Sure did! And it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. Leaving my family and friends was definitely tough, but deep down I knew this was a move I always wanted to make. I guess to say that I picked up my life and threw it across the country was actually pretty accurate.
Since being here in Colorado I’ve developed a new found love for the outdoors – hiking, skiing, biking, and so much more. And now after much time, I finally feel like I’m truly living easy and minimal. Lems has led me to understand and believe that less really is more. Instead of spending my time shopping for material things and spending 5 hours to get ready to leave the house, I invest my time in things that I enjoy doing and what makes me happy on a day-to-day basis, which I’ve learned doesn’t take much. I’ve met some amazing friends (don’t worry, Steve and Andrew are still in that mix) and I couldn’t be happier here.
My role at Lems is encompassed by organization, structure and strategy. I handle the Marketing side of things, along with social media, advertising, web development, tech “things”, events, so on and so forth… Not only do I love my job and what I do, but also I love the people that I work with and the connections that I’ve made with other brands, ambassadors and influencers along the way. There are countless days that I come into the office where it doesn’t feel like work to me. I’m dedicated to continue the growth of this company and spread the word about the amazing products that we have to offer. I couldn’t be more thankful to be in a company like Lems. What’s next? Well, this is just the beginning and you haven’t seen anything yet!
Hi, I’m Andrea! As a newbie to Lems, I recently quit my corporate advertising job as an Art Director back home in Connecticut to pursue a more balanced lifestyle out west. As a lover of all things nature, I knew Colorado would be the perfect fit, and it hasn’t let me down yet! In my free time I enjoy hiking throughout the mountains with my Canon camera, capturing various types of landscapes along the way. As the sole Graphic Designer at Lems, I am responsible for all things visual, working hand-in-hand with the rest of the team to correctly display the Lems brand to the public eye.
I appreciate the simple things in life, which is why Lems really caught my attention when I was looking to make the move out west. The culture here is quite different from what I am used to back home, and for the better. A company that truly encourages travel, exploration, and a healthy work-life balance is something Lems puts at its forefront.
The Lems family has welcomed me with open arms, and because of that my transition here has been nothing short of seamless. I look forward to exploring more of Colorado (while sporting my Lems, of course) and continuing to help shape the future of this brand!
The main thing that brought me to Lems (besides my unhappy squished toes) was the need to help fund my kids’ sports of mountain bike racing and ski racing. I had been looking for a position that was flexible and fun and I found it here at Lems. The fact that there is at least one dog in the office every day is just an added bonus. My Lems co-workers give me something to laugh about every day and we all share in our commitment to give our best to our customers and to the company. My feet are happiest when they are in Lems and the most rewarding part of my job is when I hear from customers who have found Lems to be their favorite shoes too.
Hey everyone! I'm Caileigh and I made my way to Boulder, Colorado 3 years ago from Cleveland, Ohio with only what could fit in my car and an adventurous spirit. As an avid trail runner, snowboarder, and fly fisher, Boulder seemed like the perfect fit when I finally made it out here.
I hopped onto the minimalist shoe trend after having ankle reconstruction in college due to a cross country injury and found that the only way to run pain-free was completely barefoot. Knowing this was not sustainable on the roads, I sought out minimal style running shoes while working in the run industry for 5 years knowing that this was how I was going to continue to run, compete, and be healthy for the rest of my life.
What drew me to Lems was not only the minimal design of the shoes, but the simplicity, comfort, and natural feel of the shoes for not only active use but also day-to-day use. Whether I'm hiking on a trail or cruising down Pearl Street, I know my Lems will keep me comfortable and pain-free.
When I'm not working at Lems, you can find me galavanting across the mountains on a trail run, fly fishing my way through the creeks and rivers, out on my snowboard or paddleboard depending on the season, or disappearing on another adventure!
