8.4 oz. Lightweight Leather Boat Shoe with Leather Insole

You may not own a boat or even been on a boat, but that shouldn’t dampen your interest in this minimalist boat shoe. We’ve taken our original Mariner, kept it’s natural shape, wide toebox, and ultra-minimalist design and decked out the rest!  The flexible, zero-drop outsole will bring you back down to sea level and if scuffing your skib is a concern, know that the sole is non-marking.  Forget about any anchors dragging you down, because the Mariner 2’s lightweight form comes in at a mere 8.9oz. With those features you might assume we avoided quality materials, but think again, because our newly designed insole featuring a 1.0mm pigskin leather/4.0mm breathable open cell PU compliments our top quality 1.8mm leather upper so much that your barefoot funk will certainly be kept at bay.

These boat shoes will help promote better balance more than any dose of Dramamine; increase mobility in the saltiest of sea legs; and help alleviate certain foot ailments such as bunions and hammertoes.  There may be plenty of fish in this sea, but none are going to compare to the comfortability, sustainability, and functionality of the Mariner 2.  A wise man once said, “He who waits for his ship to come in, always misses the boat”.  Don’t let the Mariner 2 slip by. Hook yourself a pair now!

    Best Boat Shoes ever

Posted by Andrew on Jun 2nd 2017

These shoes are so much more comfortable than any boat shoes I've ever had before. As a bonus, they look a lot nicer, so they're great for wearing to work or just about any occasion that isn't so dressy a suit is required.

These shoes are just perfect! I was worried about fit but they accommodate my feet perfectly. I have a narrow instep area with ties that need room to sprawl out. They fit great and look a lot better than the Sperry classics I have. They feel great with no socks; no uncomfortable seams or anything. Just a great pair of well designed, nice looking, versatile shoes.

    Mariner Walnut

Posted by John Helms on Dec 12th 2016

This shoe fit perfectly from the instant I put them on. They met every criteria that I had for a great pair of shoes: 1) low/no heel, 2) no ridiculous arch support, and 3) a wide rounded toe box that doesn't force my toes into some pointed, inhuman shape. I plan on buying a pair of Nine2Fives and another pair of Mariners in the near future.

    What could have been...

Posted by Lloyd on Dec 9th 2016

I am a big fan of Lems. I now own two pairs of Nine2fives and soon will aquire the Boulder Boots. I am waiting for a sneaker that will fit my size 13. I very much wanted these Mariners to be a success. Unfortunately, the Mariners were very tight (length and width) in the toe box. This was odd to me, considering that the same size is listed for the Mariner, Nine2five and Boulder Boot. I contacted Lems and got excellent customer service. They explained to me that the Mariner did not have the same foot volume as the Nine2fives--this accounted for the drastic difference in fit experience. So, no boat shoes for me. I wish Lems would make a boat shoe or a fisherman sandal with the same amount of volume as the Nine2fives. The quality of the shoe seemed excellent. Just make sure that you can wear a low volume shoe, as the sizing chart does not indicate this discrepancy. Looking forward to more creations from Lems.

    Worth the wait

Posted by Adam Sandmaier on Sep 23rd 2016

After waiting to get the new mariner released, I picked a pair of the walnut up and loved them since. Sizing is very similar to the nine2fives that I have and work well with correct toes.

    Comfortable all day shoes

Posted by Barrett on Sep 18th 2016

I bought these shoes to wear to work with jeans and a polo, and casually with shorts. I'm an engineer, so my sense of fashion is questionable, but my wife tells me they look great. I wore them for two days with the insoles in, but I found them a bit tight that way. I removed the insoles and wear them loosely tied, and I find them much more comfortable (I've been wearing minimalist shoes for about 4 years, so I didn't need the extra padding). On a given work day, I spend about 6 hours standing/3 hours sitting, and I haven't had any issues with soreness/comfort while wearing these. When I ordered them, I measured my foot with a ruler and followed the size chart and got the right fit on the first try. What I like about them: Zero drop, wide toe box, they feel very durable (I've only had them for a month, so time will tell), fairly light (though not as light as the shoes they replaced). What I don't like about them: The white soles are hard to keep clean. My right shoe has a large black mark on the back (I think from driving) that doesn't come off easily. The leather doesn't breath well. After a few hours of sockless wear it feels like a sauna in the shoe. I have to wear socks with them to work so my feet will stay dry. Lastly, the sole is thicker than I would like. In my mind "minimalist" shoes should have some ground feel, and I don't get much from these. It's not a huge deal, since most of the time I'm wearing these indoors or on a sidewalk, and I have no plans to trail run in them, but I do notice it when I step off the sidewalk or (interestingly) when driving. Overall a good shoe, and assuming they hold up for a few years I will definitely look at Lems again when it's time for some new ones.

EXCELLENT shoes, just like all other Lems, but these do tend to keep your feet quite hot, unlike the other more breathable Lems. Makes sense, being leather, but just a heads up that your feet may run hotter in these shoes, for better or worse.

    Lovely Moccassin

Posted by Isaac on Sep 9th 2016

I've been looking for a Moccassin like this for 7 years! I received it yesterday and it's just as handsome in person as on the website. I'd like to give it 4.5 stars as I prefer fabric laces over stiff leather, I like at least four pairs of eyelets, and I think it is misadvertised as a boat shoe (boat shoes have siped soles, and these are mostly lug soled). But Overall, it is a great shoe and my new favorite! I hope it proves durable, since I'm going to be wearing it nearly everyday.

    Friend Suggested Them

Posted by Kyle on Jul 28th 2016

My friend was wearing a pair and I asked about them. He was raving how comfortable they were. I was in the market for a new boat shoe and had planned on another pair of Top-siders. Glad I didn't do that. The Mariner is much more comfortable. Also, happy not to be wearing the identical shoe of everyone else in Chicago.

I came across the Lems brand some time ago as I was searching for a sustainable and conscious footwear line. I have fallen in love with their minimalistic zero drop approach to shoemaking. I have a pair of the Primal shoes in red and recently added a pair of Mariner's. They are perfect for all occasions, super flexible, and I always seem to be complimented on them everywhere I go. I highly recommend Lems shoes to everyone I meet!

I really like these. They are my everyday goto shoe for just about any occasion. They are wide, comfortable, and minimal, but don't get you the "double-take" or fashion critique that some other minimalist shoes do. It seems the insole has been improved since the last pair I bought, looks like these will last even longer than my last pair. Love my lems!

    Great Work Shoe

Posted by Hilldweller on Apr 27th 2016

I've got two pair of Boulder Boots, one nearly worn out. Wanted a low-top and got the Mariner Sonora. Fit is better than the Boulder --- the 48 is longer and fits me better. Great shoe for where I work. Only complaint is about the leather laces; they untie constantly. I've replaced the Boulder laces too since they're way too long and will need to replace these.

    Great Shoes!

Great Shoes! Comfortable. easy to wear all day. I found the toe box to be plenty wide as opposed to what I have read in other reviews.

Posted by Imonlysleeping on Apr 18th 2016

Bullseye! LEMS, you have hit the mark with the new Mariner 2! The length of the 48 is perfect for my size 13.5 foot. Width is perfect for my foot, which has splayed from barefoot walking. Beautiful, buttery soft, leather. The LEMS combination of anatomically-correct foot-shaped last, roomy toe box, flexible sole with just enough cushion, light weight and zero drop is the best in the business. Low profile of the heel counter and collar makes this an incredibly comfortable shoe around the heel and ankle (now, lower the heel counter and collar on the larger sizes of the Nine2Five and that also becomes a perfect shoe, at least for me). Kudos to your designers! Keep up the good work!

Excellent - Run large but narrow

Posted by Allison on Apr 18th 2016

Love the new Mariners. I sized down - at least once. I wear a 40 in the Primal 2 gym shoes and remember reading that the sizing advice was the same for these. But I ended up with a 38 to avoid loose heels and tripping over my toes. That said, for minimalist footwear, I think these should be wider. I can hardly wear these with correct toes, and even without they don't give my only slightly wide feet quite enough breathing room. Still, I'm happy. So much better than other brands.

I wrote the 'lengthy' review of the Mariner Walnut and gave them a 3. I buy Lems mariners when they first come out because I love the fit. This Lems Sonora is built like the Walnut but with much softer leather and slightly more flexible soles like the original Mariner. This makes these shoes very comfortable. They are the next best thing to the original Mariners. I give them a 4 because the upper eyelets and laces are still exposed to my bare feet (like the Walnut) causing irritation.

I love these shoes. My only disappoint is that they are not yet available just one size larger. I'm thinking that a next larger size might make them Correct Toes Approved for me. As it is, even these do not pass the Correct Toes shoe liner test for me. Please let me know if and when they become available in size 49.

    Great Shoes!

Posted by Tracy on Feb 18th 2016

I just got these today so I can't tell you about long term wear just yet. I thought I'd write a review since there are very few out there for this shoe since it's so new and none of them are from women. First off, they are very attractive and appear to be well made. I ordered my same size for these as I wear in the NINE2FIVEs and it is spot on. The toe box is a little narrower but I don't think it will be a problem. Super comfy without socks and with correct toes. I haven't tried them with socks yet. These will be my new go to shoes since they are slip ons and I want to keep my NINE2FIVEs nice for work. I can't wait to get these babies broken in! I think it's going to be an easy ride. I'll try to update this after I've gotten to know them a little better.

Marine Dealer & 40 ft Boat Owner

Posted by Cam Marine Equipment on Feb 11th 2016

I have wide widths and in the Original Mariner shoes (44) could not get my left toe or any part of my foot in the shoe. Just came back from the Post Office with the shoes, as I was going to exercise class and had my heavy white sox s on and thought what the heck, I will try the new Mariner (Gen. 2) on and see what happens. Guess what they fit perfectly. I can not wait to go barefoot this summer. I do wear Boat Shoes year round even in the slush. The Mariner (Gen. 2) are lightweight, like not wearing any shoes, and are very comfortable. I would highly recommend the new Mariner (Gen. 2) by Lems¨ Shoes. Request a Next new Generation, Slip on without any shoes laces or even half a shoe NO Back slip on . :) I do love and look forward to enjoying my new Mariner (Gen. 2) by LEMS.

    Great shoes

Posted by Dimitriy on Feb 11th 2016

This is the second pair of Lems that I have purchased. They were very comfortable as soon as I put them on and seem to be holding up great with wear. They are a bit warmer than I would like and I would love to have some sort of elastic between the tongue and the shoes that would turn them into slip-ons so I would not need to lace them each time. Wearing them without laces does not work like it does with some other boat shoes. I would also love to have a non-white sole option. A thin blue suede version with salmon colored soles would be amazing. But these are all minor points. Go buy this shoe immediately!

We are supplied with navy-coloured leather boat shoes but the toe box is awfully tapered! Please Lems...bail me out!! Hehe

    Surprisingly Comfortable

Posted by Brent Steele on Jan 2nd 2016

I have suffered with foot pain for years. I wanted a shoe that has a wide toe box and is shaped like the natural foot. I wanted zero drop as well. A podiatrist recommended the LEMS Brand so I gave these shoes a try. After many types of orthotics, I'm going back to the natural foot and Lem's are a big part of that. I just spent the day walking around in my shoes (no orthotics, just a powerstep insole) and was happily surprised to find my feet and lower legs are happy at the end of the day.

    For Everything, Even Biking!

Posted by Jesse B on Dec 13th 2015

I read a review on Birthdayshoes.com and decided to give these a try. At first I noticed the tongue was a little short and I wasn't sure about them. I had to take out the insole because they were a little snug. After wearing them for a week they softened up and now my Lems are all I wear! They're even now my favorite biking shoe!

    A good first impression

Posted by Alex Z on Oct 1st 2015

After having dealt with the problem of having short, wide feet with a fairly high instep I came across Lems. Been wearing my mariners for a couple months now and I'm rather pleased. I definitely can't wear correct toes in them but barefoot they feel wonderful and they let my feet do what they do.

    better than a podiatrist!

Posted by John Colvin on Sep 5th 2015

I wear my pair of size 48 Mariners daily and couldn't be happier with them overall. However there are a few things that will hopefully be addressed with the new version coming out fall '15. The first is the black rubber part on the heel has started to come unglued on both of my pairs (I returned the original pair when I noticed this happening after a month of wearing the shoes and the second pair started to do the same thing.) I decided to just accept the heel issue as is and moved on. It's worth mentioning that the return process I mentioned was top notch. Brad and crew do a fantastic job of treating their customers well. The second issue I noticed on the second pair of Mariners was inside near the heel. The fabric was bunched up at the seam to the point that it was digging into the insole (which meant that going without the insole was a no go unless I wanted my heel to get chewed up!). Again this was a non issue since I used the insole. This is the most important thing I can tell anyone suffering from a Morton's Neuroma. I had my neuroma removed and had the privilege to have a second surgery to remove some fat pad that was causing issues too. While the pain was drastically reduced from the surgery I still had issues in my foot with normal footwear. The Lems shoes coupled with the correct toes spacers completely alleviate any and all pain I have associated with my surgeries. I'm very aware that YMMV with foot pain and treatments, but I would be doing a disservice of not sharing my success with Lems/Correct Toes. Now if only they would make a safety toe show for me :) I'd be set for life.

Posted by Kristin on Apr 25th 2015

Not as wide or quite as comfortable as the Boulder Boot. The toe box is good, but I find these to be tight across the instep. They are still relatively comfortable with thinner socks, and I am hoping they will loosen up with time.

    Light and comfy

Posted by Jon on Apr 22nd 2015

I use these mainly in the office, so I haven't really tested them for walking yet. The soft leather and lightweight sole makes these really very comfortable, although there is something a little weird about the top fit. I have high arches so the tops of my feet can feel too compressed and I have to be careful about lacing. I got a half size up and had no problem.

    quality shoe

Posted by Kris on Apr 18th 2015

I really like the Mariner, the materials used are soft and quality products. After the break in period the heel softens up which is good cos it can feel stiff the first times. The reason i dont give 5* is because i would love to have them a few mm's thinner, around 5 instead of 9mm. Nonetheless great shoe!

If your considering this shoe, pull the trigger its awesome. Yes break-in on the heel/achilles is tough but once done it'll be your go to shoe. I'd love to see it come with a second set of inner-soles' in future so you can air a set between use. The only reason I didnt give it 5 *'s is because I'd like to see the stitching tightened up and the sole to leather sealed (glued) to finish the look.

I cannot say enough good things about LEMS, I own the boulder boot, the primal 2 and now the mariners. I've been looking at these for a long time and finally purchased. These fit better than any other boat shoes I have tried on (and I think I may have tried them all). Great shoes, most comfortable brand I have owned, a little on the expensive side, but well worth it every time.

Good, but hoping they break in soon

Posted by Daniel on Nov 23rd 2014

I like the feel of these shoes. The toe box has plenty of room and the leather has held up well so far. They walk the line right between dressy and casual, making them very versatile. The only thing I don't like is that the right shoe wears a blister in right above my heel, even with socks. Other reviews say that this wears off over time, so for now I'm sticking medical tape to that spot to give the shoe time to wear in.

All Lem's products are awesome for everyone. Especially for us spready toed individual. I really like the Mariners. I now own 3 pairs of boulders, mariners, and 9 to 5 coffee and creams. So 5 pairs of Lem's. My favorites are the 9 to 5s followed by the boots. I have one pair of boots for casual, one for hiking and one for work. All great. My closet overflows with Lem's and there is room for more.
