8.4oz. Lightweight Leather Boat Shoe with Leather Insole

You may not own a boat or even been on a boat, but that shouldn’t dampen your interest in this minimalist boat shoe. We’ve taken our original Mariner, kept it’s natural shape, wide toebox, and ultra-minimalist design and decked out the rest!  The flexible, zero-drop outsole will bring you back down to sea level and if scuffing your skib is a concern, know that the sole is non-marking.  Forget about any anchors dragging you down, because the Mariner 2’s lightweight form comes in at a mere 8.9oz. With those features you might assume we avoided quality materials, but think again, because our newly designed insole featuring a 1.0mm pigskin leather/4.0mm breathable open cell PU compliments our top quality 1.8mm leather upper so much that your barefoot funk will certainly be kept at bay.

These boat shoes will help promote better balance more than any dose of Dramamine; increase mobility in the saltiest of sea legs; and help alleviate certain foot ailments such as bunions and hammertoes.  There may be plenty of fish in this sea, but none are going to compare to the comfortability, sustainability, and functionality of the Mariner 2.  A wise man once said, “He who waits for his ship to come in, always misses the boat”.  Don’t let the Mariner 2 slip by. Hook yourself a pair now!

    Good looking comfortable shoes

Posted by Justin Baker on Oct 24th 2016

These shoes are comfortable and they look great. The unlined leather and the leather topped insole gives these a real nice feel. The only issue I have is they are a little too wide in the heel for me and a little too snug in the toes, but I have an abnormally narrow heel and an abnormally wide toe area, these shoes should fit most people fine. They are not as wide in the toes as altra or topo shoes for example. Also, because of the minimal lacing it can be hard to get a real secure fit - but this is not a fault of lems, its just the style of the shoe. The only other complaint I have is the lightly colored nubuck gets dirty easily. But enough of the negatives, these are really nice comfortable, good looking minimalist shoes.

Comfortable? Yes. Roomy in the toe box? Yes, but not as much as the Primal's that I have. I like the nice leather construction and it seems to hold up reasonably well to water and cleans up minor stains easily so far. It is decent looking, though I would rate it slightly on the "frumpy" side. The leather laces sound like a good idea, but in reality, they suck. It is harder to tie than regular fabric type, they "stick" too much, but with the downside that it actually comes loose quite easily! And I cannot tie these down tight as it really bites into my foot, so end result, they are loose fitting loafers almost. The flat design is kind of nice, but it is so thick (at least compared to the Primal) that it lacks the ground feel that I like. I thought it was okay, but after several weeks of wearing the Mariners, I slipped into my Primals and oh-my-gosh! The Primals were so much better in that regard. Don't get me wrong, I like these shoes, I prefer the leather construction over the Primals and I think these will last a while. Do not regret the purchase. But I do sort of wish I could get all leather Primal's instead...

    Awesome, super comfortable shoes!

Posted by Derek Rowe on Sep 18th 2016

I got my mariners about two years ago now, and I still wear them despite the soles breaking down to the point where I actually lost half of my left shoe's sole. It looks like the new shoe has a redesigned sole which probably won't wear out as fast as the old one. These have been the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. I used them for my junior and senior year at Penn State, a school where most students have to walk quite some distance between classes. They held up very well and were extremely comfortable. I've noticed my feet becoming ever so slightly wider now that I've been wearing these shoes for two years, and my big toes point straighter now. I want to buy a new pair because my old ones are worn out, but I need a size 48! I don't understand why Lems has discontinued the size 48 in this shoe, and I really want to buy the primal 2 shoes but they also aren't offered any larger than 46. I am a huge fan of Lems and they are definitely the best for natural shoes. I own mariners, boulder boots, and two colors of the 9 to 5 shoes, all in size 48. My feet have never been happier!

When my dad passed away, I wore his old Bass deck shoes until the seams were hanging on by the threads and the soles were so worn, hard, and slick that "deck shoe" had become an oxymoron --- the last place you'd want to be was on the deck of a boat wearing them. I didn't have any hope of replacing them, as they had become a part of my body, and I hadn't seen anything in the market that I'd even consider wearing --- until I saw a Huckberry ad for Lems. The color of the Sonora Mariner was almost an exact replica to my dad's shoes after years of the tannins being rinsed away by salt water and wear....And, the toebox of the Mariner actually looked wide enough to fit my fat feet, which traditional deck shoes could never accommodate. I ordered a pair, and have not been disappointed. They look great and go seamlessly from bouldering around Mavericks to a dressed up dinner date. They are lightweight and comfortable out of the box. I wore them without socks from the get-go and did not experience any break in issues or blisters. (The laces are a little slick at first, but eventually lose their memory and hold well). I haven't yet had them out on the boat to give them the full wet test, but based on how they performed on slippery streets and rocks, I am thinking they may be just what my sea legs ordered for the 2017 tarpon season! I don't usually review products, but I appreciate when a small company works hard to put out a great product and hope they do well. Thanks Lems! (As a reference, I wear a 9.5D in Alden/Allen Edmonds, a 9 in Olukai, and a 43 in the Lems fit great).

Mariner Sonora - perfect, except for the new fashion of removing padding under the tongue which doesn't work as well with the new leather laces as the much more comfortable laces in the early versions of the Mariner range. Colour is great, construction quality as with all LEMS is exceptional. These are my 3rd pair of Mariners, but my favourite remains the first pair, which I wore while decorating the house [sorry guys!] but which get worn daily indoors as the most comfortable casual shoe I own.

    Very comfortable

Posted by Jeffrey The Barak on Aug 23rd 2016

These shoes really do allow the toes to work as they would if you were barefoot. There is enough metatarsal and arch support to make them more comfortable than having no shoes on, and of course the very flexible soles allow freedom of movement for the foot. They can get a little hot in this climate so I would have preferred an air hole or two, and when new, the leather inside can be a little rough against the tops of your bare toes, but otherwise, just perfect. Really great shoes overall.

Love the shoes, hate the laces....what were you folks thinking? did you test these laces? these are the tried and "untrue" slippery leather laces that unfortunately have a really hard time staying ties...they loosen up often and arent long enough to double tie. However, the shoes are an absolute winner...love them. Soft, flexible, surprisingly tough enough in the soles when walking on sharp gravel or stones, and easy on the knees. Buy a pair today, replace the dumb laces and you will love them too. As an experiment though, I'm going to keep the old laces on and see if they somehow get worn in and "bite" a bit more...maybe I'll return with an update, but I doubt it.

    These shoes freaking ROCK!

Posted by Tim Marino on Jun 23rd 2016

I definitely recommend these shoes. I have warn boat shoes for many years and never found a pair that are more comfortable. I move around a ton at work and these shoes stay comfortable all day. I was equally impressed with the quality of the shoes. I would definitely rate these 6 stars if it was an option. Do yourself a favor and save your feet, buy Lems! I wasn't paid to write this review or given free shoes. I just really like them and hope other people get to experience them!

    Great Work Shoe

Posted by Hilldweller on Apr 27th 2016

I've got two pair of Boulder Boots, one nearly worn out. Wanted a low-top and got the Mariner Sonora. Fit is better than the Boulder --- the 48 is longer and fits me better. Great shoe for where I work. Only complaint is about the leather laces; they untie constantly. I've replaced the Boulder laces too since they're way too long and will need to replace these.

    Great Shoes!

Great Shoes! Comfortable. easy to wear all day. I found the toe box to be plenty wide as opposed to what I have read in other reviews.

Posted by Imonlysleeping on Apr 18th 2016

Bullseye! LEMS, you have hit the mark with the new Mariner 2! The length of the 48 is perfect for my size 13.5 foot. Width is perfect for my foot, which has splayed from barefoot walking. Beautiful, buttery soft, leather. The LEMS combination of anatomically-correct foot-shaped last, roomy toe box, flexible sole with just enough cushion, light weight and zero drop is the best in the business. Low profile of the heel counter and collar makes this an incredibly comfortable shoe around the heel and ankle (now, lower the heel counter and collar on the larger sizes of the Nine2Five and that also becomes a perfect shoe, at least for me). Kudos to your designers! Keep up the good work!

I wrote the 'lengthy' review of the Mariner Walnut and gave them a 3. I buy Lems mariners when they first come out because I love the fit. This Lems Sonora is built like the Walnut but with much softer leather and slightly more flexible soles like the original Mariner. This makes these shoes very comfortable. They are the next best thing to the original Mariners. I give them a 4 because the upper eyelets and laces are still exposed to my bare feet (like the Walnut) causing irritation.

    A good first impression

Posted by Alex Z on Oct 1st 2015

After having dealt with the problem of having short, wide feet with a fairly high instep I came across Lems. Been wearing my mariners for a couple months now and I'm rather pleased. I definitely can't wear correct toes in them but barefoot they feel wonderful and they let my feet do what they do.

    better than a podiatrist!

Posted by John Colvin on Sep 5th 2015

I wear my pair of size 48 Mariners daily and couldn't be happier with them overall. However there are a few things that will hopefully be addressed with the new version coming out fall '15. The first is the black rubber part on the heel has started to come unglued on both of my pairs (I returned the original pair when I noticed this happening after a month of wearing the shoes and the second pair started to do the same thing.) I decided to just accept the heel issue as is and moved on. It's worth mentioning that the return process I mentioned was top notch. Brad and crew do a fantastic job of treating their customers well. The second issue I noticed on the second pair of Mariners was inside near the heel. The fabric was bunched up at the seam to the point that it was digging into the insole (which meant that going without the insole was a no go unless I wanted my heel to get chewed up!). Again this was a non issue since I used the insole. This is the most important thing I can tell anyone suffering from a Morton's Neuroma. I had my neuroma removed and had the privilege to have a second surgery to remove some fat pad that was causing issues too. While the pain was drastically reduced from the surgery I still had issues in my foot with normal footwear. The Lems shoes coupled with the correct toes spacers completely alleviate any and all pain I have associated with my surgeries. I'm very aware that YMMV with foot pain and treatments, but I would be doing a disservice of not sharing my success with Lems/Correct Toes. Now if only they would make a safety toe show for me :) I'd be set for life.

    Surprisingly Comfortable

Posted by Brent Steele on Sep 1st 2015

I have suffered with foot pain for years. I wanted a shoe that has a wide toe box and is shaped like the natural foot. I wanted zero drop as well. A podiatrist recommended the LEM Brand so I gave these shoes a try. After many types of orthotics, I'm going back to the natural foot and Lem's are a big part of that. I just spent the day walking around in my shoes (no orthotics, just a powerstep insole) and was happily surprised to find my feet and lower legs are happy at the end of the day.

    Pretty good

Posted by Kristin on Apr 25th 2015

Not as wide or quite as comfortable as the Boulder Boot. The toe box is good, but I find these to be tight across the instep. They are still relatively comfortable with thinner socks, and I am hoping they will loosen up with time.

    Light and comfy

Posted by Jon on Apr 22nd 2015

I use these mainly in the office, so I haven't really tested them for walking yet. The soft leather and lightweight sole makes these really very comfortable, although there is something a little weird about the top fit. I have high arches so the tops of my feet can feel too compressed and I have to be careful about lacing. I got a half size up and had no problem.

    quality shoe

Posted by Kris on Apr 18th 2015

I really like the Mariner, the materials used are soft and quality products. After the break in period the heel softens up which is good cos it can feel stiff the first times. The reason i dont give 5* is because i would love to have them a few mm's thinner, around 5 instead of 9mm. Nonetheless great shoe!

This is my second pair. I love the way they fit. It took about two years to wear down the soles. The only problem is how easily they show spots that I have not been able to remove. This time, I am spraying them with a water and stain protector, so we'll see how that goes.

    Awesome shoes!

Posted by Justin on Feb 25th 2015

These do run small, had to order one size up and they fit great. Pretty comfortable right out of the box and only getting better. These will be my new everyday shoe. Durability seems good but have not had them long enough to really tell. It's winter here so have only really worn with socks, but comfortable without socks too. Looking at adding the 9to5 to my collection as well.

    Mad Mariner

Posted by Andrew Jones on Feb 4th 2015

If your considering this shoe, pull the trigger its awesome. Yes break-in on the heel/achilles is tough but once done it'll be your go to shoe. I'd love to see it come with a second set of inner-soles' in future so you can air a set between use. The only reason I didnt give it 5 *'s is because I'd like to see the stitching tightened up and the sole to leather sealed (glued) to finish the look.

    Amazing Shoes, Can't Stop Buying

Posted by Jason Stover on Dec 11th 2014

I cannot say enough good things about LEMS, I own the boulder boot, the primal 2 and now the mariners. I've been looking at these for a long time and finally purchased. These fit better than any other boat shoes I have tried on (and I think I may have tried them all). Great shoes, most comfortable brand I have owned, a little on the expensive side, but well worth it every time.

Good, but hoping they break in soon

Posted by Daniel on Nov 23rd 2014

I like the feel of these shoes. The toe box has plenty of room and the leather has held up well so far. They walk the line right between dressy and casual, making them very versatile. The only thing I don't like is that the right shoe wears a blister in right above my heel, even with socks. Other reviews say that this wears off over time, so for now I'm sticking medical tape to that spot to give the shoe time to wear in.

Only complaint that I have is that they seem to come untied a bit.

All Lem's products are awesome for everyone. Especially for us spready toed individual. I really like the Mariners. I now own 3 pairs of boulders, mariners, and 9 to 5 coffee and creams. So 5 pairs of Lem's. My favorites are the 9 to 5s followed by the boots. I have one pair of boots for casual, one for hiking and one for work. All great. My closet overflows with Lem's and there is room for more.

Sounded good on paper, but too much like a regular shoe to be a boat shoe. The all lether design that we know and love is bullet proof, breaks in and becomes part of you and puts you on deck even if you are miles from a boat.

Very good, but room for improvement

Posted by Robert on Oct 4th 2014

Here's what I was looking for: zero drop, light, flexible, nice-looking, athletic fit. These are the best I could find, but they're not quite perfect yet. The lacing doesn't go very far up the tongue, so it's hard to get a secure enough fit that I'd feel comfortable hiking or breaking out in a run. On the plus side, the fit has gotten more comfortable as I've worn them in, they aren't high-heeled, and they're light. I've also gotten compliments on them, which is a first for me and footwear.
